This morning, in our usual Friday morning rush (okay, every weekday morning rush), I forgot it was Western Day for Kindergarten. I remembered it at 7:58am, as we came screeching up in front the school and Matthew said “Look at that hat that boy is wearing!” Oops. (“Bad mommy! Bad mommy!” the voice in my head starts chanting.) I looked at the clock and even on my best day, knew I couldn’t make it home and back in two minutes. So I did the only thing I knew to do. I confessed.
“Matthew, honey, I’m so sorry. Today is Western Day for the Kindergarten and I forgot. Will you please forgive me?”
“Sure, Mommy. I just wish I had known so I could have worn my cowboy hat.”
Then all of the sudden, Peter jumped up and said “Cowboy hat! Cowboy hat! I have a cowboy hat! I carry an extra one in my backpack!” Then he reached into his backpack and – I kid you not – PULLED OUT A COWBOY HAT! I seriously didn’t know what to say. I was laughing too hard to speak anyway.
Here is a picture of the very cowboy hat Matthew wore to school today, back when it was fresh and new and…um, not crushed from being inside a backpack.
I just wish he had brought the boots. That would have completed the outfit.
